Regularly having your car serviced by a qualified mechanic is a must, but there is also plenty you can do yourself in between trips to the garage.

Keep an eye on your tyres – Tyre pressures too high or too low can affect the wear on your tyres, reducing the lifespan.

Check your windscreen wash – You may not realise it’s illegal for your washer bottle to be empty. Make sure it’s topped up before long journeys and, more importantly, in the winter.

Check your battery – You should aim to change your car battery every three years as a faulty or flat battery can cause your vehicle to break down.

Check your engine oil – Low or high levels, and you risk damaging your engine. Low oil can also result in a breakdown, so make sure it is always kept between the minimum and maximum.

Also, topping up your cooling system, checking your brakes and horn, testing your lights and keeping your vehicle clean will all keep it in good condition.
